The dreaded terrible two’s.
We are officially heading into the toddler years in my house and with that, there have been a lot of big changes. But one thing I’m not getting rid of or downsizing quite yet is his diaper bag. I’m sure that many parents will agree that diaper bags are still important even at this age.
I am currently using the Freshly Picked “Ebony Classic Diaper Bag” and I have been using this same bag since bringing Gabriel home from the hospital. (A full review of this diaper will be coming soon. Side note: I love this bag. haha)
When he was a newborn I remember his bag being was packed full of bodysuits, bottles, pacifiers, blankets, bibs, and I could go on and on. Let’s be honest, I felt like Mary Poppins, I could pull almost anything out of that bag.
Thankfully now that I have a toddler most of these items have been stored away. But with that comes a new strategy of how to pack all the things you need dealing with a toddler.
Here is a list of the essential items in his diaper bag.
_____
Diaper and Wipes
I don’t think this needs too much introduction. We haven’t started potty training yet so I still keep a stock of both in the diaper bag.
Mini First Aid Kit
This is a must once you have a walker. If your toddler is anything like mine, they don’t like to walk anywhere. Gabriel has one speed and it’s running. But with this also comes a few tumbles. I keep the first-aid section pretty simple and just keep a spray version of Neosporin and some Band-Aids. Hand sanitizer, both for him and me, is also stored away in the same pocket. Plus I also keep handy a pack of Clorox wipes. My guy likes to touch EVERYTHING so I try and keep things as clean as possible.
Snacks
Other than diapers and wipes this is the one thing that I always make sure I have in my bag. My little guy is such a big snack eater but he can also be pretty picky. One minute he loves goldfish, the next he hates it. (I’m sure all parents can relate there.) So I always make sure to keep a variety of snacks in my bag. Plus they are also great to use as a distraction if your little one is getting rambunctious.
Extra Outfit
Whether it’s from playing outside or spilling his food and drinks an extra outfit is a huge benefit. No matter how much I try, my little one is always making a mess when we are out and about. An extra shirt and pair of pants are always readily available in my diaper bag. I also keep the style simple. A solid color top and bottom so that they are easy to mix and match with whatever outfit he already has on.
Water bottle
Hydration is so important for kids so we always make sure that we bring his water bottle with us everywhere. We have been using this Hydro flask for about a year and he loves it. It’s great at keeping his water really cold especially if we are out and about for a long period of time.
1 or 2 toys
My little guy loves anything with wheels so I always keep at least one vehicle in his diaper bag. I know that many parents are against too much screen time, but I always keep my old iPhone on hand with some downloaded shows for him to watch. This is especially useful to have when you have appointments to keep, a car ride that is taking longer than normal, or your little one just not having a good day.

And that is about it.
I try to keep it simple and not overpack his diaper bag so that it’s easy for my husband to look through if he goes out without me. If you are interested in what I use to back in his diaper bag when he was a newborn let me know in the comments below.
